I've had a box and a half of these since they were released in January '05 and have been smoking them for my morning smoke for awhile. I wanted to do a review for you guys to maybe turn you on to these little Connecticut wrapper beauties as they are very easy on taste and very easy on the pocketbook.
Appearance and Construction-13/15 The wrapper is a shimmering Connecticut Shade with very little, if any veins. The cap is well constucted and firm and takes a punch very well. The one thing I take away for is the ungodly looking gold band that they use. It is very pretty gold foil, but way too big and needs to be downsized. Overall constuction of the cigar is very good, and I have yet to have one channel or tunnel.
Flavor-22/25 This is a mild to medium smoke. For those of you that have smoked the regular 5 Vegas line which use Nicaraguan and Dominican tobacco with a Sumatra wrapper, the filler on the Vegas Gold is a little different being that its all Honduran tobaccco aged 5 years before that Connecticut wrapper is put on. It is a mild smoke yes, but not mild like a Gispert or a Casa Torano. At the initial light up you get a somewhat nutty taste, followed by a little taste of pepper, but after about a half inch into the cigar it gives you a warm, creamy taste and a ton of good smoke. I know people are going to say its like a million others out there, but I really like these a lot. Not overpowering, but not a weakling either. Very similar to a Nat Sherman churchill that I also love, but with a little more tinge of nut flavor and easy spice.
Smoking Characteristics- 22/25 The burn is very even and I haven't had to touch one up yet unless I messed up the initial light or it was raining outside the shop where I smoke. Like most Connecticut shade wrapper smokes, drastic changes in humidity do affect the wrapper, but I dont blame that on the cigar, sometimes we can't control the humidity where we light up. The smoke is plentiful, pleasing as far as aroma ( had comments that it smelled wonderful from a female acquantance), and almost pure white. The ash is firm, silver/white in color, and holds well on the cigar. I been able to smoke these up to the band without the ash dropping off. The cigar has an excellent balance of flavor to strength.
Overall-33/35 This little robusto gives you a lot of good smoking for a $2.50 cigar (based on discount price for a box of 20), and it does get better after sitting in the humidor for a month. The taste is not ultra mild, but mild enough to satisfy someone who is not a mid to full tasting cigar smoker, but tasty enough for someone who is an experienced cigar smoker who doesn't love real mild cigars. CA has rated the regular 5 Vegas line in the upper eighties and low 90's in the past, and for the price is a top notch smoke. The Vegas gold is just like that, same good buy, and a great connecticut shade wrapper smoke that won't break you. Definitely an everyday cigar in my humidor, and an everyday smoke that I enjoy with a lot of my Toranos.
Overall-90

Smoked mine tonight and really enjoyed it. It wouldn't drop the ash for anything. I had to finally flick it into the ashtray so I didn't end up wearing it after a couple of inches. I liked the flavor, GREAT amounts of smoke, great draw. Nice mild smoke. Thanks Bluesky!

Mike, I probably did send you and Andy both torpedos of the 5 Vegas, I had both Robustos and Torpedos here. The Torp and the Robusto both have similar taste profiles and burn...so the difference between them is almost nil..
Glad you guys liked them. For an inexpensive cigar with a good Connecticut shade wrapper, it has a lot of flavor..

"I enjoyed two 5Vegas Gold robustos this week;nice mild morning smoke with a hint of honey.Only drawback was that the draw was a little tight and I fixed that with My trusty wooden skewer!'

Smoked the one i got from Bluesky on monday, it was a robusto. I dont usually like milder smokes, but this one was great! Loads of smoke, perfect draw, and tons of flavor for a mild cigar. I would definately smoke another one of these, and it would be great for a breakfast cigar. I couldnt believe how creamy and smooth it was, thanks again for this one blue.

Glad you guys have like them so far. To me, once it gets some humi time, its a very nice lunchtime smoke with loads of flavor, a tinge of sweetness with a good finish. I like inexpensive cigars like this and the Torano Grand Nica for short, flavorful smokes..can't beat them for the bucks spent

I just received one yesterday from Blue. Sounds pretty tasty, and I do enjoy a mild cigar here and there. I'll have to fire it up some Saturday morning and let you know what I think Blue. Thanks.
I had the same experience with my first 5 Vegas Gold Robusto. It starts with spice, earth, and nuts, and calms down to a cedar wood taste. The finish has some more spice and some creaminess. The burn and draw are some of the best I've had. I like the silky smooth wrapper which almost has a fur-like feeling. The constructions is very good as it is not too tight nor too loose and is consistent throughout the five inches.
The band is a hit or miss. Personally, I think it looks like the Golden Ticket, and I am Charlie Bucket, haha.
