Picked up a Gran Consul size yesterday at the local. ROTT so take this into account.

Appearance and construction 14/15
I friggin love this vitola. There is a slight tapering that comes to a small rounded head. Its really quite unique and the smoke volume is immense. I wish it was about an inch longer though. (OK who will be the first to remark on that one, I'm guessing spizzy if he reads this thread) In any case, the clip is clean and after an extensive torching of the enormous foot it lit very evenly and the draw was ample.

Flavor 22/25
Flavor was awesome. Picture the regular antano without ANY bite. For those of you not familiar with the flavor profile picture loads of chocolate with and earthy spicy peppery character. The shop owner said these are aged 5 years and I can buy that. The last third was decadent. The aroma and finish are heady and luxurious. It is a good departure from the normal caustic antano smoke.

Smoking characteristics 20/25
These are densely packed cigars so you can expect a solid white thick ash that hangs on forever. The burn was decent but slightly off. My buddy was smoking one too and both required minor touch ups. The biggest change here is the power. This is not quite the powerhouse that the regular Antano is IMO. It is still full bodied/full strength but much more refined. This cigar will appeal to more than the small number of people who are looking for something really strong.

Overall 33/35
I don't know the price point on the grand reservas but I know this is going in my regular rotation. This is the best I have had yet from the new lines out recently. Everyone go out and pick some up.

Overall 89

Had one the other night. Was going to review as well, but you beat me to it. Price point is supposedly about twice the regular Antano so in the $10+ range. That seems to be the only downside.

Great review, as I love the regular line, i'll definately look for these...just wondering, is the tobacco aged 5 years before rolling or are they actually saying they are aged after rolling???

I don't know but I know its good. BMOC, you should post one. I'm curious to see what you thought of it. They are only available now in the 3 box display case so it will be a while yet before we see the true prices. That is, assuming they box them and sell them individually at all. Maybe they don't have enough? Who knows?

Awesome review as usuall P, cutting edge. Wink

Brendon, go ahead and review that MoFo. Even though P's reviews are always good as gold(IMO for my tastes) I would like to see different opinions.

Great review Pmp. I can count on you and the other guys for realistic ratings. I need to do a search on the Comacho line that you seem to love. I have only smoked a diploma just this week and found it to be alright. I think there must be better ones out there.

I smoked one of the Antanos you just reviewed yesterday and enjoyed the hell out of it. I have one less than pictured in my cigar album now.

Palate is dead tonight . . . pear brandy and a nicely aged Partagas CC or I'd spark another one and review it . . . .have the Belicoso (?) to smoke yet . . . . how bout I review that one? I've been promising a few reviews. Getting out of practice.

Suffice it to say I thoroughly enjoyed the Gran Counsol. Was initially intrigued by the triangular box press. Uneven burn may be have been because of age (lack therof). But the usual Antano harshness was not there. But that's all I remember . . . :P

Triangular box press? I think we are talking about two different smokes.

Thanks. I appreciate it. I don't review half the cigars I smoke anymore. Mostly the ones that are highly anticipated or a big sleeper.

No, we are talking about the same cigar. It is just that the cap and the area of the cigar just below the cap had a SLIGHT box press to it. Just went and looked at the others I have, they are all the same (with regard to Gran Consuls). Can't really describe the press . . . .
