Not usually a fan of Camachos, but I wanted to give them another shot (that and I found one lying at the bottom of my humi)…

Camacho Corojo Toro – 6” x 50

Appearance and construction (12 of 15 points possible)

I pulled this feller out of the humi, where it had been sitting for the past 6 months. Well, the six months sure didn’t help it’s appearance. This cigar was mottled and ugly, although it did have some nice tooth. Also the wrapper looked faded in certain areas, not sure where that came from as this wasn’t sitting out in the sun in my house. It was rock solid under my fingers, but when I clipped it, the stick had a nice draw.

Flavor (23 of 25 points possible)

Wow! Now this is where the cigar started to surprise me. Now I have already stated that I am not a big fan of Camachos (one too many SLRs have ruined me), but this toro was a pleasant surprise. This puro kicked butt! This is a Cajun man’s cigar, I was overwhelmed with red pepper that slapped my tongue like I was it’s beetch. Underneath the spiciness was a pleasant dark chocolate and subtle earthiness that was consistent throughout the smoke. Some espresso and tobacco flavors became present at the finish (which seems to be typical for me with full-bodied cigars). Some harshness was also noted at the finish.

Smoking Characteristics (23 of 25)

This cigar burned very quickly, which is no big deal for me, although it was a surprise considering how firm it felt pre-light. The ash was a bit flaky and dropped off consistently around ½” or so. The cigar burned fairly evenly and did not get hot at all. Tons of smoke came for this stick, almost choking me out of my garage (hey, it’s cold out).

Overall Impression (31 of 35)

I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this cigar. It was not pretty, but it did pack a lot of punch… so you lightweights (Stogie) shouldn’t smoke this heavy-bodied cigar on an empty stomach. I’ve tried other of the Corojo vitolas, but I enjoyed the toro the most, maybe because it spent more time in the humi. Although a bunch of you guys are already fans of Camacho, those that are not sold yet I say give it a shot, just don’t let this beast of a smoke get you.

Overall – 89

Nice review. For the price the monarcas are dynamite with a little down time too. The construction of most camachos IMO is better than average in the n/c arena. Sounds like you got an ugly one.

Good review js. I love the Corojo Toro's , its one of my favorite smokes and I prefer it over the SLR's. Its takes a few months of resting to be just right, but its full of flavor and body. I have about 20 of these in my humi right now, and they are all very nicely made, just as well as the Padrons I have.

great review. These are great little sticks. I enjoy the regualr Camachos very much, but enjoy the Diplomas more. However, they are definately a box worthy smoke!

I just came back from a trip to the Camacho factory and fields about 4 weeks ago. Learned alot, smoked alot and great stories (Donkey Punch). Anyway, the Camachos are OK. I particularly enjoyed the 11/18, fantastic smoke.

Nice review, jsp...I had a Camacho Corojo Diploma from TOC and it was outstanding!!!! I'm definitely going to pick up a few more.

A good cigar and a good drink on the back deck by the lake...if that doesn't make you relax, nothing will!

I am just finishing my last stick from my third box of the camacho corojo monarcas. These definitely have to by my favorite daily cigar. They have everything I look for in smoke. They are rich flavorful powerful, although I don't feel it anymore, and moreover they are inexpensive at less than 70 a box shipped. What could be better? I guess the diplomas and the 11/18 are better but not as inexpensive. They were great the day they came off the truck and even better a few months down the line. Almost every cigar from all 3 boxes was expertly constructed. I especially like the flattened cap on these. It reminds me of the cap on the padilla hybrid. I did notice that although I used to leave my humidor at 70 RH these smoke much much better at 65. The draw and burn are better and the flavors are richer.

Those 11/18s both regular and liberty are bada$$ smokes. I love the shape. They are also pretty powerful most of the time.
