Hey Everybody! This was the first time trying one of these. I got it in a sampler pack from Holts. I let it sit in my humi for a little less than a month. I was very excited to try this cigar because it looked so good. It was almost a reddish color, with a very oily wrapper. It measured 5.5 x 52.

This cigar was very interesting. After I lit the cigar, it initially had no flavor at all. I puffed and puffed, and for about the first half inch, I was unable to taste anything at all. Then suddenly, the taste appeared, which tasted of wood and nuts. The nuts was very present. This flavor was very pleasing. But then, about an inch into the cigar, the flavor pretty much disappeared again. I couldn't believe it. However, after a couple of puffs, the flavor came back, but this time it had all the same flavor but with a little bit of spice. Luckily, the flavor stayed throughout this time, however, the flavor did not change from that point on. It didn't really develop any new or interesting flavors. It was completely one dimensional. At the end, this cigar had a short finish, getting bitter at the end.

The draw on this cigar was very easy. It burned crooked throughout the entire thing though. Also, the ash was VERY flakey. Just a little tap would send some ash off and onto me.

My conclusion: I was very disappointed. While the flavor was very pleasent, it soon got boring. I kept hoping it was change or get better, but all it did was remain the same. Maybe this cigar would be better if it were a shorter smoke, but for 5.5 inches, the flavor just dragged on and on. It may suit some other people, but not me.

That is youth I'd wager. Those little flavor change problems can usually be attributed to a cigar needing some more age in my experience.

thanks pmp. Maybe I will buy their sampler and let it sit in the humi for a couple of months. The best way to find out is by trying it!

I agree that age is important to this cigar. I smoked one of the torpedos recently from a handfull I picked up about 9 months ago and it made all the difference. Off the shelf, I noticed most of the things you mentioned!!!!!!

see? im not the only one with add, he thought it was boring, too!

in all seriousness tho, i thought it was a nice power cigar for the price, but the flavors were one dimensional and lackluster. however, for the price, its a fine smoke in my book. hitting that "poor phase" of the semester, so its time to look to cheap powerful cigars.

I guess I'm lucky. My local shop is pretty small, they have quite the selection, but their volume isn't all that great. But most of what I buy there seems to already have at least 6 months or so on it, I love it!

I also admit, its probably the strength I like the most about this cigar, I can't even recall what the tastes where heh.

After trying the Robusto Grande and Churchill sizes in the Antano line (and the Churchill in the Celebracion line), I have to say I prefer the shorter vitolas. I find these to have a raw and leathery flavory and a sharp aroma that's one-note and becomes tiresome very quickly. Not a whole lot of compexity and certainly little in the way of finesse -- I have to wonder what mertied the 90+ CA ratings. Mostly, I like these when I'm in the mood for a "straight off the roller's table" experience. And I've learned only to smoke a few inches, because there's little reward for hanging on to the nub.

One thing that can't be disputed is that this is a gorgeous cigar for the money --- beautifully made with a wrapper so oily, you might think these came over on the Exxon Valdez.

It doesn't help that my first stick gave me the shakes and a near panic attack with all that ligero. I know at least three people who've yakked after smoking these -- not counting myself.

And that is enjoyable? No way I would smoke these fresh off the rollers table. They need at least 6 months to a year IMO or they are only a fraction of their full potential. But I have had several JDNs that were worthy of high marks and praise.

I'm with pmp on these, they are a very good cigar with minimum 6 months, but really at least 1 yr. on them...very nice flavor bombs that retain their full flavor but not the harshness...

I have one Stogie sent me about 6-8 months ago that's ready for smoking, and another I got last December.

I usually prefer the milder smokes with a little woodsy flavor to them, so we'll see how I handle these when I fire one up. I'll be sure to do it after a big steak meal!

Im with PMP and Smokum on this one. Its only worth smoking IMO if its sat atleast 6 months or so. I have some Beli's with some good age, Im trying to get to that year mark before I spark another up.

I LOVE JdN Antanos especially the Gran Consuls. I do find that the bigger guage cigars are more flavorful. Age helps these, but it's not super critical. I've smoked two boxes of these and am starting on a third, with the longest age being about 9 months. I've yet to have a disappointing cigar, they have all been good to excellent in flavor. I've also experienced excellent construction, with only minor flaking on a couple of occasions.

Thanks for bring this back up guys. I now have a summer job at BevMo and they sell cigars. I bought a couple of Machitos and they are very nice cigars. One night, after work, I was in the mood for a shorter smoke cigar. The only decent full strength, short smoke they had were the JdM Machitos. So I bought one and was VERY impressed. I paired it with a double shot of Zaya Rum to sip on. It held it's strength very well. Thank you guys for your positive remarks on this cigar.

Already planning a trip to my local on the way home from work. As everyone knows I am addicted (like a fat kid to cake) to the JDN Cele's. After everything I have heard about the 1970's, definately going to try one of these this evening. What size packs the most punch?

BMOC - I have tried the machito, consul, gran consul, and belicoso. They were all good. I guess the question is, how much time ya got? I would buy a machito and a gran consul at least. They seem to be the standouts from what I remember.

The Gran Consul and Beli pack the most punch. I like the machitos for a short smoke but they are a bit toned down IMO than the other Vitolas. Its still a good smoke though.

Sounds like I am going to head towards the Consul. I am getting off work pretty early and my wife has plans this evening. So, I have time to sit back and erlax and enjoy this stick with my buddies. Thanks for all of the advice.
