What's the deal with cracking cigars. I just bought a freaking Don Carlos at this shop I go to sometimes and it looked great all the way home and when I went back to get it out of my humi BAM! FUBAR. I am pissed. I specifically picked a don carlos b/c the last couple i had I didnt like very well and wanted to give them another try. I figure cigars crack b/c they are too dry or go from really moist to a really dry environment too quickly but damn. All I did was take it out of the cello and place it in my 67% humi and only for about 3-4 hrs. And I grabbed one of my Oliva V's b/c I knew I wasnt going to make it with the carlos and it was cracked. Now the box it came from is in my cooler humi that's been constant 65-69% and the others I've smoked from that box have been stellar.

You're right. Rapid change in humidity is the culprit.

The 'toughness' of the wrapper plays a big part. The DC cameroon wrapper is pretty thin/delicate.

Being from CT I know all about drastic temp changes. One day it is 70 and the next is 45...WTF! What I recommend doing is buying one of the hard plastic "herfadors" and when you buy your smokes put them in the herf, 100% air tight. Bring em home and you should be good. The only other thing that would cause some harm is the outside temp when you smoke it, that is if you are outside.
