I recently had the pleasure of somoking a La Unica 200 Natural cigar. First of all you have to know the story behind this brand. Fuente decided to make low budget premium cigars, sold in bundles, and so La Unica was born. Today this brand is only sold in boxes, but mine was from an old bundle.

The outer structure is firm, with what looks like sandy patches below the wrapper. The wrapper is has well structured veins, and the pre-lit aroma was creamy and nutty.

On lighting, the first few puffs were still immature, but once the cigar got going, strong notes of earth were noticed. As the stick got going I noticed an even burn all the way down. On the 2nd third of the stick, the flavor suddenly turned very spicy and hints of cedar were noted.

On the final third, the flavor became strongly woody and the smoke was becoming very rich. Smoked it till it nearly burned my lips and was sorry to put it down.

La Unica has long been one of the best mild cigars on the market.

It's made by Fuente but it wasn't their idea -- it was Stanford Newman at Cuesta-Rey who pioneered the idea of selling a first-quality cigar in bundles. At the time, Fuente couldn't give away their cigars so they were more than happy to take on contract work.

I just finished a few La Unicas from the mid-1990s, back before they had bands. Many people don't beleive that mild, Dominican/CT shade cigars like this age well but they're wrong. In particular, I've found that La Unica and Fonseca age very well.

Yeah, I liked that La Unica very good. I had a Don Kiki Brown Label tonight, and though it was good, it was too heavy on me that I am still having a buzz till now.

1. Stop smoking Don Kikis. Don't admit to anyone that you ever have.

2. If you have the opportunity and enjoy Cameroon cigars, you may consider trying the La Unica Cameroon. It's an entirely different blend than the regular La Unica. It's also more expensive and tough to come by. But it's excellent and since it's blended and made by the same people who make La Unica, it might be a nice next step up the ladder.
