Ashton ESG review:

Appearance and construction: 9/10

This stick was beautifully crafted, nice oily wrapper, very little veins, and silky smooth. Decided to use the punch instead of cutter. Cut well, pre-light draw was nice, peppery.

Flavor: 8/10

First taste I got from this cigar was a lot of pepper, very spicy at the start; this soon mellowed out and started reminding me of the FFOX. Powerful cigar, but not over powering. As I continued to smoke this, the flavors would start to develop, but then peter out. I detected some wood tones, and an over roasted coffee back taste.

Smoking characteristics: 9/10

Ash held tight, for about an inch, burn was even, which I hear is uncommon. Volumes of smoke, not unpleasant.

Price point 2/5

This one was a gift, but in my opinion, not worth the price tag. This would be a great $5-$8 stick, but not the asking price.

Based on the rating scale, this paned out to an 80%. Would I smoke another? Maybe. Would I go out of my way to, I don't think so.

Thanks. This is pretty much what I had heard about the ESGs. Although I love the VSGs, I think I'll pass as well on the ESG.

On CA's top 25 cigars of 2006 they listed it as the #6 cigar, and there was no VSG on the list. So this MUST be a better smoke.

You have a strange criteria for what "must" be a good smoke. Smoke one and let me know what you think about it. Everyone has different tastes.

I have had several of the ESG smokes and I have really enjoyed them. I should tell you that I also like the Opus X also; they share the same wrapper.

The ESG starts off pretty mellow and produces a good amount of smoke (straight cut). About 1/3 of the way through the cigar changes and really begins to deliver a kick. I have had them before and after a meal and I must say that after the meal is the way to go. I'm not sure if it is the wrapper or filler, but this smoke makes my lips numb after awhile. Probably too much information.

I would concur with the above post about price. It is overpriced. In California I have seen them for $22 and $40.

It's amazing how dense a vast majority of the people on this forum truly are. Minalpharetta, I congradulate you for being the only one who knows what sarcasim is. By the way the 21 year ESG(robusto) is much better than the 20 year ESG(churchill). Neither are in a league w/ the VSG, but Suckface says they are better so everyone go run out and buy them.
