I knew going into this that the Bolivar is really young and would quite possibly even be raw -- and it was. But it's really promising.
This was the first time I've seen the 109 shape, since I missed out on the Edmundo Dantes. It's a great looking style, sort of a cross between a double robusto and belicoso. It looks really hard to roll and the Bolivar was perfectly constructed.
The pre-light was woody with some cinnamon-like zip. The wrapper was really, really oily, somewhat veiny and a little unevenly hued with a few greenish spots.
On first light, I got a blast of power that quickly settled down. I got lots of leather and wood with some light, cocoa like sweetness but not much complexity. The cigar really picked up steam about 1/3rd of the way down, but it also had a sourness on the finish that was indicative of its youth.
This is a rather strong smoke and lacking in complexity and finesse right now, but in three to five years it could really be a 93 or 94 pointer. Definitely a different flavor experience than I'm used to from Bolivar -- a lot more upfront, with leather and cedar at a level approaching something like Opus X.
Any one else dumb enough to smoke one now?
