Indian Tabac Grand Cameroon Legend Maduro Robusto Grande (5X50)I thought I’d give one of these a try because I’d heard good things about Rocky Patel’s offerings latley, and I was getting a bit bored.
APPEARANCE AND CONSTRUCTION:Nice firm roll, no soft spots. Fillers are Nicaraguan, Brazilian, and Dominican, with a Cameroon wrapper, but the wrapper on the Maduro version of this cigar is Brazilian. Dark oily wrapper that seems “thicker” than most, some veining and a lot of tooth (which is always a good sign for me). Huge band that takes up almost a third of the cigar! Overall, nicely made.
FLAVOR:To me, this cigar tasted like a cross between a RyJ 1875, and a CAO Brasilia. As it burned down it seemed to alternate between the two, and had the exact flavor profile of both at various times. Primarily flavors of cedar and wood, with the Brazilian wrapper lending its own character to the flavors like a CAO Gol! (It’s a Brazilian wrapper as well). Character changed as it burned down, with flavors changing to nice leathery cedar and white pepper/spice coming in at the last third of the burn, but there were always nice cedar undertones. Nice long lasting spicy leather finish, without the characteristic sweetness of Nicaraguan tobaccos.
SMOKING CHARACTERISTICS:Had some very minor burn issues, but they all corrected themselves without any adjustments. “Dirty” salt and pepper ash held for 1 ½ - two inches, with just a touch of flaking. Burned nice and cool without any harshness, and had a nice aroma. Lots of nice “dry” smoke…I didn’t slobber and drool all over like I sometimes do with some of the overly sweet Maduros.
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS:A very nice cigar, with “real” tobacco flavors, and very different than I expected. When I looked at the tobaccos in the blend, I was really expecting the typical Nicaraguan Maduro flavor profile, that is; sweet cocoa and coffee flavors, but that was not the case. The best description I could come up with is a RyJ 1875 with more flavor, but with a spicier finish. If you like the Romeo y Julietta 1875, or CAO Brasilia, you will like this cigar, and it’s usually much more reasonably priced than either. I would rate it as a full flavored, medium-bodied smoke…a nice change of pace, no matter what you smoke normally. I’m looking forward to trying the Cameroon wrapper soon, and trying more of Rocky’s offerings.
A nice smooth flavorful smoke that won't take your head off.
